My Teaching Philosophy

It is a firm belief of mine that a student excels fastest in a learning environment that is not only safe and fun, but in one that also prepares you for real world success. I feel that it is my obligation to pass on any and all of the lessons I have learned from my world class teachers and translate that directly into an individualized education for each and every one of my students. I like to base my teaching philosophy off of this brilliant quote by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, “Through first-class education, a generation marches down the long uncertain road of the future
with confidence.” A first class education is the key recipe to success in the modern day music world. I want every one of my students to become as versatile as possible by the time they are
venturing out into the professional scene. My students will develop skills that will prepare them for every musical scenario. I heavily emphasize the importance of understanding both classical and jazz literature in my teachings. Both of these can be used as a starting point to branch off into nearly every other genre of music. I highly encourage all of my students to begin auditioning for ensembles outside of school at a young age. Participating in ensembles with other young musicians who are just as serious as they are is an experience that is absolutely crucial in the early developmental stages of their playing. I have had many of my students make their district honor bands, community orchestras, and even auditioning into CSUN’s prestigious music program due to the hard work that we have endured together. I truly believe that I have developed a teaching system that generates success, as is evident of my current trumpet studio. It is my hope that my students continue to grow and someday pass the torch to the next generation of young musicians.
